The Nivelle Offensive - 16 April, 1917 to May 9, 1917. The architect and enthusiastic promoter of the ill-fated operation was the French General Robert Nivelle. Nivelle promised mass breakthroughs and quick a quick defeat of the German forces in the opposing trenches and, if it all went south, he claimed that everything would called off if the operation wasn't successful within the first 48 hours.... which it wasn't.... and which he didn't. Instead, the battle dragged on for 5 weeks and resulted in over 300,000 Allied casualties. Other leaders, both army and political, eventually stepped in and put an end to the offensive. Oh, they also promptly sacked General Nivelle.
