At the turn of the 20th century, Germany had been spending enormous amounts of money and resources on Zeppelins and other lighter-than-air aircrafts. Shortly after hostilities began, it became apparent that these vehicles were far too susceptible to enemy countermeasures. By 1916, Germany had begun manufacturing the Gotha bomber aircrafts. These planes could fly at high altitudes, were relatively durable, and could tote a respectable bomb payload. Throughout the war, zeppelins and Gotha bombers alike conducted many bombing missions over Britain and other targets. The Gotha series were among the first heavy bombers to be used in a significant way in warfare.
